Aqeeqah (naming Ceremony): On 7th Or 8th Day? (3939 Views)

Have you ever given birth to a child or attended a naming ceremony (Aqeeqah)? If so, when did it take place? Most times, we assume the naming must be done on the same day of the following week i.e. Sunday to Sunday, Monday to Monday, and so on. But is this accurate? In truth, this common practice often misses the mark. The Prophet ﷺ said: "A child is held in pledge for his Aqeeqah, which should be slaughtered for him on the seventh day..." — (Abu Dawood 2838, Tirmidhi 1522) So, the key question is: How do we properly count the seventh day? Islamically, a new day begins after Maghrib (sunset), not at midnight as widely assumed. This has important implications: ➡️ If a child is born before Maghrib on Sunday, then Sunday counts as Day 1. That means the Aqeeqah should be on Saturday, not the next Sunday. ➡️ If the child is born after Maghrib on Sunday, then Monday is Day 1, and the seventh day falls on the following Sunday. ❗️What does this tell us? We need to stop following culture blindly and start aligning our actions with authentic Sunnah. It’s okay if we were unaware before, but once we receive correct knowledge, we should make a change. “When evidence comes, we must submit.” As Muslims, this is the attitude that will keep us on the right path. May Allah grant us sound knowledge, sincerity, and the ability to act upon the Sunnah in all aspects of our lives. BarakaLlahu feekum. Abu Hafs Lukgaf 19 Likes 2 Shares |

Thanks for the update. This makes it quite clear. Before, I used to totally exclude the day of birth altogether. This is a very valuable piece of information. Kudos.

This is accurate, the best way for the naming days. Is 7 days not 8 days as some people portrait it

But our fore fathers have been naming there children after 7 days... the question is who taught who? Or who copied who?

Having naming ceremony on the 8th day is a cultural norm. So religion should not be mixed up with culture when it comes to naming. You can decide to follow the islamic norm, if it is suitable for you. 2 Likes |

It's more of tradition than religion to name babies 7 days after birth, and this practice is by both Muslims and Christians especially in Yorubaland

Lukgaf:A child born after magrib on Sunday (night of Monday) was actually born on Monday which will count as the first day of the seven. |

this sounds more logical and valid. I don't know whether culture or religion should be prioritised. But I don't also, religion respects healthy culture.
